Forever is composed of nows by storyforsomeone Because peace may not be something you fall upon or finish but it’s certainly something you can build. Stone by stone; moment by moment. Luckily for all of them, Dwarves are rather good at building things that endure. This is summarised by the author as a series of moments after the Battle of Five Armies: of grief, healing, rebuilding, and finding home. It's fifty short paragraphs that build to a beautiful whole.

A Road from the garden by Chrononautical Bilbo Baggins has a brother. Worried about gossiping neighbors, his parents are very careful to hide Kili's nature. Long used to hiding his own nature, Bilbo accepts the same responsibility for his brother as he grows up. But hiding anything becomes impossible when dwarves come to the Shire A thoroughly delightful re-imagining of the Hobbit along with part of LOTR. This is a long read you settle into and enjoy.

History Teaches Us by Drenagon To reclaim their kingdom, the Company of Thorin Oakenshield will need all the help they can get. Thorin is returned from the dead complete with the knowledge of the first quest to free Erebor precisely so that as he restarts the quest, he can ensure that he and his companions do not make the same mistakes again. So this reclaiming of Erebor is very different in many, many ways from the original and Thorin is much changed and far more likeable. It's extremely well written and is also very funny at times. If I have any complaint it is perhaps that in my partiality for Bilbo I feel that at times his contributions to the quest have been diminished in this retelling as it is seen very much through Thorin's and the dwarves perspective. Yet Bilbo's importance to the company from the very beginning is made very clear from the attitudes and actions of the dwarves. The sequel is Shall History Remember Thorin's choices have shaped the fate of Middle Earth for many years to come. Both stories are part of the Lessons well learned series which includes a number of delightful short stories that link in with the two main ones making a very long and highly pleasurable read.

The Naming of Hobbits by Margo_Kim There's a certain point where you can no longer ask someone what their name is. Thorin isn't sure exactly when that point is, but he knows that it's probably some time before the person in question saves your life. On the far side of the Misty Mountains, Thorin realizes that he never quite caught the first part of Mr. Baggins' name, and he finds that it's astonishingly harder to learn than he would have thought. Fili, Kili, and Dwalin are no help whatsoever. A very funny one shot that made me laugh out loud at times. I was going to quote from it but got distracted and ended up read the whole story yet again, so no quotes. :-)

Forges of Origin by Nyruserra The deep places of the earth. Vaulted cathedrals filled with Mahal's voice. And the perfect cradle from which to reform two souls; forged anew in synchronous heat and passion... Only, things aren't going exactly how Thorin Oakenshield, Reformed King Under The Mountain, dreamed. Bilbo is confoundingly...confused. The bond that is tearing apart his very being is in danger of being snuffed out before it's even had much of a chance to begin, and there is far too much political chicanery than is good for his fraying nerves and temper. And orcs. Definitely too many orcs. If he is very lucky, he may just manage to woo Bilbo, and possibly save his sanity in the process... A highly enjoyable, very well written prompt fill for a Dwarven Courtship story. The story itself fascinating and while centring on Bilbo and Thorin and their courtship is very well plotted so that events and politics around the pair are featured plus it includes the whole company in glorious detail. Well worth a read.

Discovering Mr Baggins by Eareniel A.K.A. The Quest for Erebor: The story of a Hobbit, told through the eyes of the dwarves. This is a rewarding 'behind the scenes' read, with each chapter presented from the view point of one of the dwarves, plus Dis. The focus is on Bilbo and the way he slowly becomes accepted as part of the company and earns their trust and appreciation and also of the interaction of Thorin and Bilbo, but it also provides a beautiful characterisation of the individual dwarves themselves.

Clarity of Vision by mithen In a Middle-Earth where Erebor never fell, a shadow remains in the heart of the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo Baggins finds himself drawn reluctantly into a quest that will lead him across the continent--from Bree to Lake Evendim to the icy North and beyond--with a party of five dwarves searching for an artifact that will cure the ailing King Thrór. An entertaining and quite different beginning to Bilbo's association with Thorin, Dwalin, Balin, Fili and Kili dwarves. There is humour alongside the adventures, trials and tribulations as well as a fun side trip into the Shire. Highly enjoyable.

Unexpected Journeys by story monger Looking back, John wasn’t really sure why he’d thought it was a good idea to get a flatshare with a dragon. A Hobbit crossover Often very funny and beautifully characterized, a delightful crossover with John the hobbit and Sherlock the dragon in the Sherlock world, a pleasure to read.

An Unexpected Addition by Karategal All of the dwarves survive the Battle of the Five Armies, but Bilbo must return to the Shire to sort out his old life and make way for a new one in Erebor. Over one year later, Bilbo comes back to the Lonely Mountain with a recently orphaned Frodo. King Thorin isn't quite sure what to make of this new, tiny addition to his Company. A long, well written, well characterized canon AU. The author has done her research into what is known of dwarven culture from canon and beyond that has and created traditions and cultrual 'norms' that feel highly authentic. While the story revolves around Bilbo, Frodo and Thorin, all of the company play major parts, the splendid Dis arrives midway through and the mainly female OCs are beautifully written and add to the story. Very much worth reading.

Coats and Customs by imaginary golux  AU in which Smaug never happened: Thror arranges Thorin's marriage to a hobbit. Thorin isn't entirely sure what a hobbit is. A well written and often delightful story that pulled me in and kept me reading long into the night.

The Sons of Durin by KivrinEngle Bilbo Baggins is a humble grocer, living a simple, quiet life. He likes his solitude and his predictable routine. The police say the Sons of Durin are a crime family. The government has labeled them a group of environmental terrorists. Thorin Oakenshield will tell you that they are simply desperate for a home. But when Bilbo is dragged into the midst of the group as their unwilling burglar, his life will take a turn for the terrifying, and everything he has taken for granted will be torn asunder. Superb story telling with a very clever and highly entertaining and often thrilling modernisation of canon. I read this in one sitting, which was fortunate as I think some of the cliff hangers would have left me biting my finger to the bone. An excellent read.

Unsafe Places by rabbitinthewoods Hobbits do not, in general, have records of their time before the settling of the Shire. But some things are known. Some things are held as truth. One of those, held in the mind of every hobbit before they even have the words to define it, is that fauntlings must be protected at all costs. So when Bilbo wakes abruptly to a muffled crying, there's nothing for it. Cultural misunderstandings ahoy and an absolutely epically, BAMF Bilbo. :-) Gen

Come to Morning by sun ryder John Watson was a Shire, born and bred, but he was really quite terrible at it. Perhaps that's why Bilbo Baggins has never heard his story before. Or maybe he's never been told because John Watson ran away from home, then darted around Middle Earth trying to stop a serial killer, and fell in love with an Elf. Along their way to the Lonely Mountain Gandalf will tell Bilbo and his Dwarven companions the story of Sherlock the Brilliant and John Watson the Fearless, and maybe, just maybe, Thorin and Bilbo might find their own path to the same place. Really enjoyable story, the John and Sherlock story interweaves beautiful into Bilbo's travels.  The characterizations in both parts of the story are excellent. and I am particularly fond of  Sherlock's horse Faun who has the good taste to become very, very fond of John. :-)

On Adventures and Other Forms of Conduct Unbecoming of a Wizard by manic intent. For as long as even the old Gaffer could remember there had been a wizard living in the hill at Bag End, overlooking the Shire. As wizards went, this one wasn't the wandering sort, always out to lure gentle folk out onto nasty adventures, or even the powerful kind, the sort that lived in high towers, reaching out into the ways of the world. A beautiful written story that provides excellent characterisation, laughs, chills, heartache and promise and finishes in a bittersweet manner. Bilbo/Thorin are at the heart of the story, but many other characters shine. Do go and read it.

Third Watch by uncer giedd geador Sat on watch together, Bilbo and Kíli take the opportunity to discuss beards, the lack of them, and the irresponsibility of youth. Highly enjoyable. :-) Oh, and gen, obviously.

Off Cuddling Dwarves by Renchan Bilbo gets lonely at night, and after too much whining, Thorin decrees that Bilbo will spend the nights sleeping beside Dwarves. Thus, five times Bilbo asks for a cuddle, and one time someone asks him.  Written for a prompt. This fic is warm and charming and provides excellent characterisation of both the dwarves and Bilbo. I was smiling by the end of it.

Beat of a Treasure by Jaded Coral For saving the lives of his friends, Bilbo gets their eternal gratitude. For trying to save his own, he gets the immortal curiosity of a dragon.  A Sherlockian style retelling of The Hobbit. :-) So with this rec I get  double the pleasure. This is Bilbo and Smaug very cleverly done.

I appear to be reccing The Hobbit fic now... damn that Martin Freeman and his wonderfully nuanced portrayal of Bilbo Baggins and blow me down, who'd have thought that dwarves could be sexy! :-)

(Not Quite) Prince Charming by manic intent The problem, Bilbo would later tell Gandalf in aggrieved irritation, was not so much the unannounced visitors, oh no, but the fact that due to the lateness of the hour and sheer merciless fate, it came to be that at the respectable age of forty, Bilbo was being introduced to a real, live king while wearing striped pyjamas and fluffy slippers. A fascinating, long and involved modern au where Bilbo is a security analyst hired by deposed King Thorin, at the suggestion of MI6 operative Gandalf, to help him get back into his country and regain control of the Arknestone technology.

alicambs: (Sherlock)
The Sherlock kink meme joyfully jumped onto the fact that the actors who portray Sherlock and John have both been cast in The Hobbit. MF is Bilbo and BC is playing Smaug the Dragon or to be more accurate he is the voice of Smaug the Dragon.

Treasure Me by anon Prompt: Bilbo trespassed Cumberdragon’s lair one too many times. Read the warnings in the comments and prompt. Basically a very hot and sexy fic admittedly with a huge dub con element to it (the further prompt was Poor-unsuspecting-maybe-even-asking-for-it-a-little-bit-because-of-his-danger-kink!BilboWatson and Bored-manipulative-I'm-going-to-punish-you-by-making-you-enjoy-this-and-things-you're-going-to-be-ashamed-of-later!SmaugLock ) but also with with a helping of fluff and delightful bickering at the end.

Here Be Dragons by emotionanalysis John makes a bet with his friends to go and find the rumoured dragon of the mountain – he gets a dragonful more than he bargained for. A long, intriguing and emotionally satisfying story or as the author says - 'It's basically 500 words of porn, then 17,000 words of plot, followed by another couple thousand words of porn.' :-)

Sleeping with Dragons by random nexus There's a dragon and a halfling and some hijinx ensue, but perhaps things aren't as they seem... or maybe they are? Highly enjoyable and rather clever. :-)
