The Remarkable Worm by marysutherland A French decathlete's had a breakdown, but Sherlock has a match-box that may explain it all. John's inner dialogue is a thing of snark, wit and charm. A very enjoyable read.

An unlikely association in seven fish by Bold as Brass Of course they haven’t met up every Friday for fish and chips. Inspired by a sarcastic comment made by Mycroft in The Empty Hearse, this is fun, clever and very witty. :-)

Mise en Place by arizona John Watson had no intentions of taking over the family business, but when he returns from Afghanistan, battered and bruised, and discovers that his sister Harry has run their restaurant into the ground, he doesn't have much choice. There's only one thing that can save the Empire from closing for good – the celebrity star of the BBC series Restaurant Reconstructed, Chef Sherlock Holmes. Or Sherlock  as Gordon Ramsay. :-) A very enjoyable read, with bonus recipes. :-)

Blood Brothers by 221b_hound  I want to read about supernatural shenanigans without thralls or vampires as a superior race or all that. I also wanted to reference John's reaction to being locked in the lab at Baskerville - I always thought that was more of a PTSD reaction; surely John Watson has been hunted in the dark before, while on deployment. But then I found another way to make that a traumatic event for him. Heh. Whumping John Watson is shamefully entertaining, because the dear boy always pulls out the BAMF. I also wanted to set this conceptually in a bigger picture, with Colonel Sebastian Moran up to no-goodery of his own.  And whether John really does own an opera cape.In this story, John and Sherlock are the epic BFFs I always consider them to be. An entertaining and on going series with Vampire John, who is his deliciously prosaic and BAMFy self, and Sherlock dealing with all kind of supernatural shenanigans.

The Shape I Found You In by irisbleufic & Moony  In which Sherlock invades Sweden, John watches too much questionable television, Things Are Finally Talked About, and absence makes the heart grow odder. And the sequel Lay Me Down A wonderfully entertaining and heart warming development of John and Sherlock's relationship from friends to lovers over text, email and, in the sequel, face to face. Don't forget to read the subject lines of the first lot of emails as they are highly entertaining and so in character. :-) also on AO3 here

A Beginners Guide to Apiology by VictoryCandescence John and Sherlock meet for the first time as old men in Sussex.. There were tears, the kind of 'this is so sad and yet so beautiful' type of tears. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

It Had to be Ewe by flawedamythyst “I have been to every country that raises sheep, asking the same question, and it has led me here.” Crack AU in which John is a sheep farmer and Sherlock is nuts. Well, okay, maybe that bit isn't so AU. Nuts and very funny. :-)

More Things Than Are Dreamt Of by 1electricpirate In which John is (reluctantly) a wizard, Mycroft is (apparently) omniscient, and Sherlock is (surprisingly) oblivious. A crossover with Harry Potter in that this is in the HP universe but the series is focused very much on John, his attitude to his magic and his relationship with Sherlock. The mix of the muggle world of canon Sherlock and the magic world of HP is beautifully done. Sherlock's fascination with John and his magic, alongside his frustration that neither John nor magic conforms to his understanding of science is a delight to read.

It's Genetics. Unfortunately by Lisgreomg Merlin Holmes, the youngest Holmes brother, reaches out to Sherlock for help finding a friend that has gone missing. This is a Merlin/Sherlock crossover in Sherlock canon time. While it is presented as primarily a Merlin fic due to the pairings I found much of its pleasure was its depiction of John, Sherlock, oh and Mycroft. John and Sherlock, like Arthur and Merlin and the knights are reincarnations or as the author puts it ' souls with a capital-D-Destiny'. However, unlike Merlin and Arthur, they have no memory of their previous lives. All in all it's a very good read.

Incarnations of London by The BookshelfDweller "There once were two men who lived in a city called London. There once was a city called London that lived in two men." A one-shot about the way different aspects of London translate into John, Sherlock and their relationship, and a tribute to the amazing city which contributes so much to the magic of this show - it is a love story, in more than one way. A fascinating and absorbing character study of Sherlock and John.

Knight, Burning Bright by shadownashira Kidnapped during a case, John rescues himself and comes across an injured Sebastian Moran. Afterwards, Jim Moriarty changes his mind and decides that one John Watson isn't as boring as he first seemed. I really enjoyed this, I liked the writing style, I adored this John and the author certainly achieved her goal of writing 'a realistic, canon-compliant John/Jim fic' as this has the potential to evolve into something highly intriguing.

29 Days by naughtyspirit John bets Sherlock that he can’t compliment someone every day for a month. It ends up many of these compliments are aimed at John and it leads to them kissing/confessing or whatever. Highly enjoyable angst free fun and games. :-)

The Affair of the Asphyxiated Acafan by AJHall Sarah flies home from a conference in the US and brings an unexpected gift home for her boyfriend - or, more precisely, his flatmate. Game on! A very intelligent case fic with the added interest of being seen through Sarah's eyes. This means we get the bonus of a 'girl's eye' view of the women folk of Sherlock and a gorgeous perspective on John while Sherlock remains Sherlock!

Beautiful Ideas by metisket Mike knew what would happen if he introduced John Watson to Sherlock Holmes. He knew exactly what would happen, and he did it anyway. A mischievous 'fleshed out' Mike Stamford lighting the touch paper and then sitting back to enjoy the fireworks. :-) Beautifully written, clever, insightful and funny.

Give Me Away by notinacreepyway John Watson has his first everything. Teen Sherlock and John and the progression of their friendship. Rather delightful.

The Thing That Happens to Other People by inkvoices “Did you serve in Afghanistan or Iraq?” the man clarifies, steepling his fingers under his chin so that he looks like he’s praying for patience, and John reminds himself that he only has to attend six obligatory sessions with a psychiatrist. This fic made me smile. :-)

Unexpected Journeys by story monger Looking back, John wasn’t really sure why he’d thought it was a good idea to get a flatshare with a dragon. A Hobbit crossover Often very funny and beautifully characterized, a delightful crossover with John the hobbit and Sherlock the dragon in the Sherlock world, a pleasure to read.

If It Were Otherwise by Scopes Monkey Sherlock Holmes, criminal genius and greatest business rival to Jim Moriarty, is in need of a doctor with loose morals and a quick trigger finger. Lucky, then, that he has a debtor whose brother is a retired army doctor, recently returned from Afghanistan. AU; John/Sherlock; OCs I wasn't certain I was going to continue reading this at first as it initially concentrates on Sherlock and a number of OCs, one of which Moriarty sneeringly refers to as the 'puppy' and I'm very Johncentric in my reading choices. However I stuck with it and when John arrived on the scene I was rewarded for my patience. This is a long story and the, well written, OCs are an essential part of it. It is also written from a number of povs with Moriarty's cleverly reflecting his madness. Long, well  plotted and fascinating.
alicambs: (Bilbo)
Come to Morning by sun ryder John Watson was a Shire, born and bred, but he was really quite terrible at it. Perhaps that's why Bilbo Baggins has never heard his story before. Or maybe he's never been told because John Watson ran away from home, then darted around Middle Earth trying to stop a serial killer, and fell in love with an Elf. Along their way to the Lonely Mountain Gandalf will tell Bilbo and his Dwarven companions the story of Sherlock the Brilliant and John Watson the Fearless, and maybe, just maybe, Thorin and Bilbo might find their own path to the same place. Really enjoyable story, the John and Sherlock story interweaves beautiful into Bilbo's travels.  The characterizations in both parts of the story are excellent. and I am particularly fond of  Sherlock's horse Faun who has the good taste to become very, very fond of John. :-) WIP

Beat of a Treasure by Jaded Coral For saving the lives of his friends, Bilbo gets their eternal gratitude. For trying to save his own, he gets the immortal curiosity of a dragon.  A Sherlockian style retelling of The Hobbit. :-) So with this rec I get  double the pleasure. This is Bilbo and Smaug very cleverly done.

On the courting behaviour of the British Sherlock by Bold as Brass Sherlocks can be destructive when bored. We're hoping the introduction of a companion John Watson will improve matters. This is hilarious. It's a Zoofic where the characters are presented as though there are part of a wildlife documentary, sounds daft, but it really works.
