Good grief, it's been some time since I last posted a rec! I have been going through my A03 bookmarks, deleting some and following up the authors on others to find other good reads. This series makes me smile and is well worth a read.

Feathers Verse by Kryptaria consists of 4 parts. The main story is the first one, On Feathers and Bacon Sandwiches No one has ever stayed with Sherlock longer than a month. At least, no human. Fortunately, John Watson isn't about to let the little things - like biohazardous experiments and the constant threat of danger - get in the way of his friendship with a very special, very brilliant man like Sherlock Holmes. This is amusing, delightful and full of humorous one liners that made me smile throughout. As to the ducks, well who knew. :-)

The Curious Adventures of the the Dr Watsons by ShinySherlock What if ACD Watson and BBC Watson switched places . . . “Imposter!” Hands clenching the lapels of John’s coat, Holmes shoved him anew. “Yes!” John agreed, nodding, and then grimacing. “Sort of!” A highly enjoyable read, beautifully written with the courtly behaviour and language of the Victorian era contrasting strongly with the relaxed manners and speech of the present time. Both an adventure and a believable love story.

alicambs: (Bodie and Doyle)
For Queen and country by AnythingButPink September, 1990. Bodie and Doyle cross paths with a seriously injured homeless girl and find themselves navigating London Below in the company of the Marquis de Carabas. I haven't felt like reading Pros fic for some time lately, but was intrigued by the summary of this fic and rather enjoyed the imaginative journey I was taken on. I was a little less convinced by the Bodie/Doyle romance as it was a bit too soppy for my liking at times, but overall it was a good read.

Coventry by standbygo A Sherlock/Dollhouse crossover AU. Previous knowledge of Dollhouse not necessary; no spoilers either. An absolutely excellent, highly creative and thrilling read. I enjoyed every minute of it.

The Mystery of Ill Opinions by mundungus42 Two Elizabethan actors dream of leaving women's roles behind, and Master Sherlock Holmes agrees to help them find them a playwright to write them roles to rival Marlowe's Tamburlaine. But strange things are afoot in the Holmes household, and Sherlock and John must accomplish this feat while discovering who wants to kill Sherlock and why. A very clever and witty tale of Sherlock and John, along with many other characters, transposed into Elizabethan England. The author makes very clever allusions to many of Shakespeare's plays and even manages to have the playwright himself play a role in the mystery. Well worth a read.

Beneath the Desert Moon by i ship an armada & Shiny Sherlock The year is 1936. Renowned consulting archaeologist, Sherlock Holmes, has been hired by the British Government to find the Ark of the Covenant, before his competitors can deliver it to Hitler and his army. Sherlock faces many challenges in his quest, but the biggest of all might be facing John Watson and mending their broken relationship. If you know the film you know the plot, but Sherlock and John are very much their delightful selves and other canon characters are well used.

From Which Love Grows by Red Chapel If this were an ordinary fairy tale, it would start with ‘once upon a time’and a princess or a dragon or a poor fisherman by the sea. But this is not an ordinary fairy tale and it starts with a seed. A seed From Which Love Grows. The author has taken a fascinating and original idea and fashioned a slow, beautiful love story.

Pros Recs istia has gathered all the Pros recs made in the now closed LJ comm [community profile] crack_van. She says,  'The recs are still in the comm, but they're not all easy to access, and many of the earlier links are dead. That struck me as a shame. I thought it might be useful to gather all the recs, fix the dead links as much as possible, and post them together.' this is the result.

A Study in Strays by philalethia John Watson moves to 221B Baker Street. Unfortunately, the flat's already occupied. Fun, clever story. John's interactions with Sherlock cat (and the cat's personality is Sherlock to a 't') are a delight to read.

Wartime Allies by shadownashira  Ever since the Pool incident, Moriarty has been strangely inactive. John's world does not revolve around the consulting criminal, and so life goes on. Then a new player tries to take over London, and Jim Moriarty has his own opinion on that. I like this, it's John centric, the dialogue is good and we see John being a capable, compassionate doctor/surgeon as well as treating people he knows are criminals with respect as long as it is reciprocal.

I must add a cavet though as I see this mistake repeated time and time again in Sherlock fics. Surgeons in the UK are addressed as Mr/Mrs/Miss and therefore neither Sherlock's Dr John Watson nor Conan Doyle's original Watson are surgeons, they are both medical doctors.

How to Accidentally Summon a Demon by patster223 Sherlock is possessed by a demon. A damned, wicked soul that uses the kitchen table for blood rituals and experiments. John doesn't even notice the difference. Short, highly amusing fic..

Sherlock-the-Pooh by thisprettywren Sometimes Sherlock likes a game of some sort when he comes upstairs, and sometimes he likes to sit quietly in front of the fire and listen to a story. This evening— “What about a story?” said Sherlock. John writes children's stories about his and Sherlock's adventures, featuring Sherlock ther Pooh, Mycroft Robin and the adorable Johnlet (although I find John even more adorable :-)). Just delightful.

Note: I found this story while reading through a list for "The Holmsies," the fanfic awards co-hosted by fuckyeahteenlock and sherlockbbcficrecs. All the fics on the list have less than 25,000 hits on AO3 and less than 250 reviews/comments on any other forum (this would be true at the time of selection), so none of these fics are the so called 'classics' of the fandom and many were completely fresh to me. The Holmsies are open for voting until 1st September 2014. Do go and check them out.

Man's Original Virtue by anonymous “Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man’s original virtue. It is through disobedience and rebellion that progress has been made.” - Oscar Wilde. It’s the little rebellions that he has to make to keep himself sane. This is an “Ella Enchanted” fusion, where John is cursed with obedience. It's a very interesting with a great back history with Harry. The way John thinks about people and the way they throw orders around and how that affects him is fascinating.

The Remarkable Worm by marysutherland A French decathlete's had a breakdown, but Sherlock has a match-box that may explain it all. John's inner dialogue is a thing of snark, wit and charm. A very enjoyable read.

Clarity of Vision by mithen In a Middle-Earth where Erebor never fell, a shadow remains in the heart of the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo Baggins finds himself drawn reluctantly into a quest that will lead him across the continent--from Bree to Lake Evendim to the icy North and beyond--with a party of five dwarves searching for an artifact that will cure the ailing King Thrór. An entertaining and quite different beginning to Bilbo's association with Thorin, Dwalin, Balin, Fili and Kili dwarves. There is humour alongside the adventures, trials and tribulations as well as a fun side trip into the Shire. Highly enjoyable.

An unlikely association in seven fish by Bold as Brass Of course they haven’t met up every Friday for fish and chips. Inspired by a sarcastic comment made by Mycroft in The Empty Hearse, this is fun, clever and very witty. :-)

Mise en Place by arizona John Watson had no intentions of taking over the family business, but when he returns from Afghanistan, battered and bruised, and discovers that his sister Harry has run their restaurant into the ground, he doesn't have much choice. There's only one thing that can save the Empire from closing for good – the celebrity star of the BBC series Restaurant Reconstructed, Chef Sherlock Holmes. Or Sherlock  as Gordon Ramsay. :-) A very enjoyable read, with bonus recipes. :-)

Blood Brothers by 221b_hound  I want to read about supernatural shenanigans without thralls or vampires as a superior race or all that. I also wanted to reference John's reaction to being locked in the lab at Baskerville - I always thought that was more of a PTSD reaction; surely John Watson has been hunted in the dark before, while on deployment. But then I found another way to make that a traumatic event for him. Heh. Whumping John Watson is shamefully entertaining, because the dear boy always pulls out the BAMF. I also wanted to set this conceptually in a bigger picture, with Colonel Sebastian Moran up to no-goodery of his own.  And whether John really does own an opera cape.In this story, John and Sherlock are the epic BFFs I always consider them to be. An entertaining and on going series with Vampire John, who is his deliciously prosaic and BAMFy self, and Sherlock dealing with all kind of supernatural shenanigans.

The Shape I Found You In by irisbleufic & Moony  In which Sherlock invades Sweden, John watches too much questionable television, Things Are Finally Talked About, and absence makes the heart grow odder. And the sequel Lay Me Down A wonderfully entertaining and heart warming development of John and Sherlock's relationship from friends to lovers over text, email and, in the sequel, face to face. Don't forget to read the subject lines of the first lot of emails as they are highly entertaining and so in character. :-) also on AO3 here
